My 3000th Dram With Jameson 12 yo: 1940s vs 1980s

Another milestone already! After recently reaching 1000 spirits reviewed on More Drams since its creation, I’ve now hit 3000 different whiskies tasted, as far as I can track and remember, thanks to Brian ‘Malt Musings’ excellent whisky spreadsheet. As with any major milestone, the question was what to pour in celebration. I considered some older Balblairs, like the 1966 38-year-old and a 40-year-old bottled by Specialist Drinks, or one of several silent distilleries, such as Lochside, Glen Albyn, Glen Mhor, Dallas Dhu, Pittyvaich, Brora or pre-reopening Port Ellen, but I decided to go in a different direction: whisky from another era. That left plenty of options too, and for this occasion I chose a Jameson Irish whiskey bottled in the late 1930s or early 1940s, even older than the pre-WWII Ballantine’s 30-year-old we tried two years ago. It also needed a sparring partner, and since I recently picked up a few dozen old minis from the 1970s to the 2000s, a Jameson 12-year-old in the bunch gave me the comparison point I needed.

Dingle Single Pot Still, Single Malt and 10yo

The Irish distillery Dingle recently expanded its core range with a Single Pot Still and a 10-year-old single malt, also updating the non-age statement single malt’s recipe and ABV while unveiling new packaging. Since Paddy Foley stepped in after Graham Coull’s departure, the distillery has remained active, committed to growth despite an undesired pause is their expansion plans. It’s encouraging to see Dingle continue being so active. Up next are reviews of the brand new Single Pot Still, Single Malt, 10-year-old, along with their first ever 10-year-old released in 2023.

Nine Dingle Celtic Wheel of the Year

For the first time, I’ve planned ahead for St. Patrick’s Day to prepare an Irish whiskey review. We’re taking this opportunity to do something I’ve been eagerly awaiting: reviewing the complete Dingle Celtic Wheel of the Year collection. I waited for the collection to be complete, then I waited a bit longer, partly due to procrastination, as reviewing nine whiskies isn’t something that can be rushed or done in a single day. I’m only human! Now that the collection is complete, let’s dive into all nine Dingle Celtic Wheel of the Year expressions!

Redbreast 12-year-old & Cask Strength

Redbreast is one of the several brands that are distilled and matured in New Midleton Distillery, near Cork. New? Yes, as the original Midleton Distillery was founded in 1825, but was closed in the 1960s as their owners, the Cork Distilleries Company, merged with John Power & Son, John Jameson & Son in 1966 to form the Irish Distillers Group in 1966. They decided to group all their production in a single distillery, built at Midleton as it was the only site with room for expansion. Amongst the brands made at Midleton, the most famous are Jameson, Redbreast, and the Spot (Blue, Yellow, Red…) range. And on the menu today, three 12-year-old Redbreast whiskeys, as we’ll try the classic Redbreast 12-year-old and two different batches of Redbreast 12-year-old Cask Strength.

Dingle Fourth & Fifth Single Pot Still Releases

After a long wait, Dingle Distillery is finally releasing its fifth (and last) Single Pot Still small batch. Like with the fourth which was released at the end of 2020, it is available in two versions, one reduced at 46.5% ABV and one delivered at cask strength, in smaller quantities. Now, I want to add a disclaimer before I review the fourth and fifth releases, both in their reduced version.
